History: Once near extinction in Missouri due to over hunting, restoration began in 1949. Restoration was a success and the population has boomed. Population growth in urban areas has magnified with the growth of human environmental impact. We provide them all of their favorites: cut grass, water in lakes and an absence of natural predators.
Canada Geese are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty.
Goose Conflicts:
Feeding by people: Feeding geese (bread, popcorn, etc) is not healthy for them. It also encourages them to remain in the area.
Fecal: The average goose defecates 1.5 lbs. of fecal matter per day.
Nesting: During the nesting season both parents will defend their nest from people. If a person walks into the area where a nest has been build they will be hissed at, chased, or nipped. Geese are devoted to their young and will defend them.
Range: Canada Geese are native to the United States and Canada.
Lifespan: 15-20 years.
Natural Predators: foxes, raccoons, owls, coyotes and snapping turtles.
Reproduction: The Canada geese mate for life with reproduction starting at three years of age. Nesting season beings in March and April. Average nests contains five or six eggs. The eggs are incubated 28-30 days. Canada Geese make devoted parents and will defend their nests and young mightily.
